Southeast Asia’s transition to low carbon economy and its potential

Synopsis: Energy demand in Southeast Asia is expected to grow by two-thirds between 2016 and 2040. Under current policy and technology scenarios, CO2 emissions are expected to increase in lockstep with this growth in energy demand. The use of coal could double, and the region’s share of global emissions is expected to rise from 4.1% to 6.5%. However, the region could also go on the path of sustainable development – a scenario which would keep global temperature rise to well below 2°C. In Southeast Asia, the use of renewable energy could close the gap between this sustainable scenario and status quo by 40%, and improvements in efficiency would narrow it further by another 25%. Apart from the electricity sector, the industrial and transport sectors are key. However, the approach will vary across counties in Southeast Asia due to differences in geography and stage of economic development. For example, solutions that offer massive energy efficiency gains and hydrogen economy could address cross-sectoral needs for a country like Singapore, where other renewable solutions would be limited due to its small size and lack of land. Conversely, larger Southeast Asian countries may benefit from large-scale renewable energy solutions. Countries could also consider collaborating on cross-national infrastructure, such as high-voltage electrical lines. In other words, cooperation among Southeast Asian countries and a systems approach is key to collectively achieve emission goals.

Carbon capture, storage, and utilisation: decarbonisation pathways for Singapore’s industry

Synopsis: Guidehouse (formerly Navigant) evaluated the potential for Carbon Capture Storage and Utilisation (CCSU) technologies to abate greenhouse gas emissions from the energy and chemicals sectors in Singapore. Geological storage potential in neighbouring countries indicate regional storage potential is an estimated 85 giga tonnes. For CO2 utilization, 49 identified CCU technologies were assessed to select the ten technologies that are most promising for Singapore to explore further. By 2050, all ten shortlisted CCU technologies may reach maturity. Their net abatement potentials range between 0.3 – 2,000 kilo tonnes of CO2, based on one reference plant per technology. All technologies with substantial abatement potential require significant amounts of hydrogen or ammonia. For CCU technologies to be effective climate mitigation measures, this feedstock needs to be low-carbon. It is important to explore the future availability and costs of these low-carbon commodities.

Building green hydrogen generation and storage capability in Singapore

Synopsis: Lowering carbon emissions is central in the fight against climate change. One of the ways to achieve this is through the usage of green and renewable energy sources. However, in urban places such as Singapore, due to limited land and inconsistent solar energy, achieving zero emission with 100% renewable energy is extremely challenging. Despite this, in 2019, SP Group managed to power the first zero-emission building in Southeast Asia. The self-sustaining building is 100% powered with renewable energy and green hydrogen via an innovative hydrogen energy system (HES) and can be disconnected from the national electricity grid. The HES is part of SP Group’s Concept Lab that brings together corporates and experts from industry and academia to test and pilot next-generation sustainability solutions for a low carbon and smart energy future for Singapore and the region.

Singapore Chemical Plant Blowdown Modifications

Synopsis: Steam cracking operations at the Singapore Chemical Plant involves the usage of dilution steam that has been generated from a portion of the process condensate. This is subsequently topped up with on-purpose make-up steam to meet the needs of the plant. Through this project, some of the process condensate bypasses the dilution steam generation system and is directly sent to the wastewater treatment system. This allows more condensate to be boiled off as dilution steam, resulting in less make-up steam and, by extension, less energy needed.

Innovative approach to improve valuable ethylene product recovery

Synopsis: The capacity-up of PCS ethylene plants and enhanced integration with neighbouring companies, resulted in higher frequency of C2’ imbalances, higher product rundowns to the LT tanks, and higher C2’ BOG generation. To overcome the capacity limitation of the existing C2’ BOG compressor, a C2’ BOG Roots blower system (in-house design) was commissioned in Phase 1 to recover excess C2’ BOG, which will otherwise be flared. As part of continual improvement, it was enhanced prior to up-sizing of the blower in Phase 2 to mitigate the impact of additional BOG generation

Boiler Controls Upgrade

Synopsis: The original single point linkage system used was a camshaft and a single motor to control both the air and fuel supply opening. This set-up created a “Play” or “Slop” in the linkage system and prevented the fuel and air linkage from returning to their respective positions. A Parallel Positioning Servos which independently controls the air and fuel supply openings was installed to maintain linkage position when moving from low fire to high fire and vice versa. This provides the proper mix of air and fuel with minimal to no CO; decrease the O2 levels to >3% (reduction in excess air); improves the combustion efficiency; and reduces the NG consumption per steam produced.
